Judge Beverly Curran, Grosse Pointe Shores
Jurist, mother of nine extended counsel to friends
Mark Hicks / The Detroit News

Beverly Curran delighted in helping others.

For years, the longtime area judge served as a marriage counselor, aided friends and sought ways to assist others.

"She was always thinking about others," said her son, Jason Grobbel. "She was all about how to help people live their lives to the fullest."

Judge Curran died Sunday, March 23, 2008, at Sunrise on Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods. She was 79.

Born July 14, 1928, in Detroit, she studied art history and worked ina gallery while in college.

In 1950, she wed Cyril Grobbel Jr.

They divorced in the 1980s.

After having seven children, she earned a juris doctorate from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1968.

Serving as a Macomb County assistant prosecuting attorney until the 1970s, she was elected a municipal judge in Grosse Pointe Park, where she served through the 1980s.

She later acted as a probate judge in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.

The cases captivated her because many concerned "doing the tough things that impacted others in the greatest possible way," Grobbel said. "The way she treated them made a change in their lives."

During a trip to Rome several years ago, Judge Curran was selected from a crowd of thousands to meet Pope John Paul II -- an experience sheconsidered "amazing," her son said. "She always thought that was one of her greatest accomplishments."

Besides boating and visiting the historic Ford mansion near her home, other pursuits included cooking, painting, writing and coordinating parties, Grobbel said. "She was very creative."

Other survivors include three sons, Cyril Grobbel III, Patrick Grobbel and Christopher Grobbel; five daughters, Melea Grobbel, Marita Grobbel, Regan Stolarski, Cassandra Budzik and Anastasia Minor; and 20 grandchildren.
