Report of Engagement, Company I, 339th Infantry
On
Monday, 04 NOV 1918, Company I, along with a
unit of French Artillery, were manning the front lines
along a three mile stretch of the Archangel-Vologda
Railroad, between Verst markers 448 and 443.5. The
Bolsheviks forces were known to be occupying positions
along the railroad near Verst 443.5 and points further
south near the village of Emtsa. At 1:45 P.M., enemy
artillery opened fire on their rear positions and then
the Allied troops were subjected to a Bolshevik infantry
assault comprised of an estimated 800 to 1000 men. During "sharp action" over the next three hours, the 140 Allied soldiers successfully repulsed the attack, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. Allied causalties included one killed, one missing and two wounded (one severely), while known enemy dead totaled thirty-four, with fourteen prisoners and an estimated 100 to 150 wounded. 1 |
